A writer’s worst fear?

Yesterday I took what must be one of the most heart-breaking, nerve wracking journeys any writer can make: a trip to the computer repair shop. My poor little HP baby, her left select button has given up the ghost entirely.

I hope that she can be repaired without too much cost, because she is a cheap little number truth be told. This is maybe the price I get for abusing her with my non-stop pounding on her keys for the past year and a half here at Medium! One of her sticky underside strips came off a few months ago, and did not take well to my attempted patch job.

It’s the first laptop I have ever owned, maybe surprisingly for someone who had a blog for a few years before I joined Medium. I have always used the home computer, it was basically my computer before Covid hit and my husband starting working from home. Within a few weeks I realized I needed my own computer to write on, and so she came into my life just over two years ago.

I have never had a relationship with anyone quite like the one I have with her before. I tell her all my secrets, filling her up with rambling, half written drafts, meandering musings, convoluted confessions, and even terrible poetry. She emboldens me somehow. She doesn’t tell anyone what we get up to because she is mine, all…
