Do My Top Ten Earning Stories Forecast a Hope in Hell for My Future on Medium as it Stands?
My historical statistics in the face of perplexing site shifts
Like many people here, I am no longer earning what I once was, or attaining much distribution or reads. I have been writing on Medium since July 2021, and have ridden out a few storms here. But never has it felt quite so pointless or hopeless or entirely dismissive to be a writer here.
Somewhat ironically, I had my biggest ever viral hit in January. It is now my biggest earner of all time, even paid at the lower rate, even without a boost (which it was nominated and turned down for, as have all of my nominations that I am aware of since November of last year).
This is the white whale, the fluke. It took me three and a half years to hit one of this magnitude (MAGAnatude? 😉), unfortunately at the same time Medium decided to start paying me 10% of what it was before.
I don’t normally wade too deeply into politics, this was just a weird experience I had. It has been divisive, to say the least. Hate reads still pay, but I did find having to block or interact with truly abusive people draining and have mostly stopped engaging with all new comments, sorry.
