Embarrassed to say I actually read "French Women Don't Get Fat" years ago before I quit diet culture, it was full of horrible fatphobic "wisdom" unsurprisingly and included a story of the author being fat shamed by her father after gaining weight in America was used as her origin tale - so harmful and gross! I do think French fashion has its own unique style to some extent but the elevation of thin-ness and beauty inherent in most of the French girl stuff is really gross, you are right. Great piece!
