Great advice all. I had visited the country I moved to a few times, had a partner and some inbuilt support system of his friends and family, so I had it easier than most. Saying that it was still very hard and I don't think many expats think about the long term. America is a very different place than it was when I Ieft 20 years ago, no place is perfect you are right but I am seeing an increase in people who want to get out. I would mention to check that the healthcare system is adequate (I know America's is outrageous but it is a big factor for people with chronic illness who need repeat prescriptions/regular healthcare).
