I agree it can add color (colour ;-)) to my writing but I have been pretty self conscious about the transition from blogging to Medium, as an expat blog I felt people would understand my occasionally random sounding language but I try to keep it "American" on Medium out of fear of sounding pretentious or weird.

Which is impossible anyway as it's so ingrained I am in denial. Like right there I just used "as" instead of "since" or "because", that's very British! I think there is a kind of passive tone in UK English that seeps in too, it's hard to describe but it slots in with my casual style of writing, sometimes I feel it de-emphasizes many points I am trying to get across. It's kind of hard to describe, sorry if none of that makes sense!
