I don't think anyone ever thinks cancer will happen to them (unless there is family history), it's a fairy tale we tell ourselves. Cancer doesn't care how old you are, how healthy you are (admittedly some cancers do, which makes it all to easy to think people with unhealthy lifestyles somehow brought it on themselves). I learned this lesson at 28 with lymphoma. Wellness culture is largely a lie. I am glad you were diagnosed in time, this is an important message to women not to ignore the lump, even when we think it couldn't possibly happen to us. It's such a humanizing moment in life, and it takes time to process, I think we are in shock during diagnosis, treatment and for awhile after. You express very well how surreal the expectation vs. reality of cancer is, it's such an important thing for people to hear about. Wishing you much healing and acceptance.
