I haven't read the piece you mention and he probably mentions it but to be fair, the diversity of serious, well written roles for women her age in Hollywood is probably not much to choose from (although I know she probably gets top pick!). I loved her earlier stuff too, Out of Africa, French Lietenant's Woman and Sophie's Choice are probably my favorites but also enjoy her comedic work. She also has that ace up her sleeve when doing comedy like The Devil Wears Prada, the only person I can think of who does it the same way is maybe De Niro, or Frances McDormand. Where they can just flip a switch and be devastatingly serious/dramatic even in something silly and have it ring true.
