I mean, nothing will ever top the Ciaran Hinds version for me, it was perfect. This felt like Cliff's Notes Austen, which is fine, but I loathed the modern dialogue shunted in with Austen lite, if they did use the book dialogue they had the heroine turn to the camera and explain it like it was Shakespeare, which is insulting imo, it's not that difficult! Also Richard E. Grant, what a missed opportunity, it should have been a great part for him but all of the nuance in the supporting characters was eradicated. I just don't think Austen needs to be this dumb, modern adaptations can be smart, I love Clueless, and Bridget Jones, this film felt like it couldn't make up its mind what it wanted to be. I do think the leads did the best they could and had nice chemistry but there was zero real dramatic tension in this for me.
