It is weird to me that Salinger, Carson McCullers, Harper Lee, Kerouac, and Sylvia Plath were considered the "modern" authors I read as a teen/young adult when those books were already 25+ years old. We read a few more modern authors in college but it was still mostly pretty dated in retrospect! I guess they seemed "hip" compared to Chaucer and co. lol. :-)
