It's a tricky one, I self publish for a lot of similar reasons, sometimes it doesn't seem to make a difference whether I publish in a pub or not. I think that may be changing with the boost stuff but who knows. None of my self published stuff has ever gotten the attention of the big pubs but I think I'm not in their niche/style.
