It's tricky for sure but representation does matter. I think Downton Abbey actually handled racism and homophobia in a very period appropriate way with three dimensional characters, it didn't feel like re-writing history. Bridgerton and Sanditon have modern edges throughout that aren't realistic (like you mention with Moulin Rouge and Romeo and Juliet). This kind of "just go with it, none of it is realistic" approach works as a leveller too.
