Obituary for My Dad
He was a good Dad
My Dad passed away last week. I found out about it yesterday. He lived in West Henrietta New York, near where his brother lived until his passing a couple of years ago but spent much of his life in Norfolk, Virginia where he (and later I) grew up.
I hadn’t seen him in many years. We spoke on the phone a few times over the years but had lost touch for the past decade or so. I still thought of him often and wished things could be different with us.
Living in another country probably didn’t help, made it easier to pay less attention to time passing. I really wish I’d checked in on him more now, of course. He was an alcoholic and when my parents split I was a teenager and happy to get away because things had been bad for a while.
But he was a good dad too, in many ways he was probably one of the better dads around. He was like a big kid himself, he liked movies and snacks, and would make a big event of movie nights when King Kong or other event night movies were on, back in the 80s when you couldn’t just queue up Netflix! We both really loved Superman. We also went to drive-ins growing up and would play the ”hide the kid in the backseat” game.
He was usually happy to hang out with me and I was a daddy’s girl when I was little. He loved fishing, often with his dad, and I usually got dragged…
