Please never question your instincts just because men choose to ignore your boundaries. You aren't crazy and don't deserve to feel uncomfortable or unsafe anywhere, regardless of the culture. I understand the instinct to be polite/non-aggressive, but sometimes you just have to tell someone to fuck off, with force. I have done it a few times when I felt unsafe, sometimes they give you no choice. I am so sorry this experience has tainted what sounds like an otherwise beautiful place for you.
