There is a popular thing called a gap year in the UK where students take a year off to travel, I think Americans go from school to more school to work and could do with more breathing room to figure things out. It's a luxury not everyone has, I know I was very lucky and circumstances fell into place that supported me when I needed them, because I was lost at school before that, completely.
