We participated in none of the "jubbly" nonsense, being in grumpy old Scotland, and my husband doesn't get worked up about it but on a stroll that weekend we discovered a street nearby bedecked in bunting and Union Jacks and I think he was pretty irked. Brexit has really destroyed what little unionist spirit was left in Scotland, understandably. As you say while children and the elderly starve and freeze it's unthinkable how sections of society who aren't particularly well off themselves will still line up to celebrate obscene wealth and privilege.

I don't understand it, and I agree the Boris show is very nearly as bad as the Trump show, which the ugly American in me can't help but feel a tiny bit smug about, because for YEARS I have dealt with people being rude and obsequious towards me about America and our dumb ways. At least the people in France do not stand for a subpar standard of living, I don't know what it is about the UK AND America that allows us to roll over while politicians pocket millions and out cost of living doubles. There would be rioting in the streets every day in France if they tried it there.
