Why Doesn’t Medium Pay Writers For External Views?

Over the past week, I have seen a pretty big bump in my stats. My little writer’s heart went through the rollercoaster of excitement and then disappointment each day, as I noticed that unfortunately, most of my views are external. This makes them all but worthless in terms of Medium showing me the money.

My Foster the People write-up has been getting lots (by my standards) of external hits. It’s being shared somewhere, not exactly sure where but each day I am getting steady traffic.

A couple of my articles were retweeted by a friend with a large following on Twitter, which meant lots of people who don’t even follow me have been clicking on my articles. Again, this adds up to less than peanuts from Medium. Like, not a cent, ok maybe 2 cents, for probably a thousand views in less than a week. It bites.

As a new writer here (ish, I joined in July) it’s a bit frustrating. I quit blogging after seeing my blog reads tank over time — partly my fault I am sure for not keeping up with the influencer zeitgeist and…
